This article comes to you from Simon Hill, Voice123 voice over talent. He wrote me about an amazing experience he had in a film he did that went to Cannes Film Festival.
He admits, the movie is a bit dark, but he did get to act and voice act in it!
See Like Smoke teaser trailer here.
The point of sharing this is to show what he did to prepare. Simon writes…
“My first short film is playing at the Cannes Film Festival this week in the short film corner. It’s pretty incredible considering this was only supposed to be a resume builder for me! I performed the lead role last summer while enrolled in the full-time acting intensive at Vancouver Acting School. Because of the emotional demand of this film, I employed many different methods of bringing myself into it. For example, there is a scene where my character Argon confronts his ex business partner for the first time. Argon already needed to be in an emotional place of brewing hysteria. Before every take I would run down the block, do 50 push ups, then scream at the top of my lungs and think of a time that paralleled the situation. Believe me when I say this, I was exhausted after every single day of filming.
Out of nowhere, this little short film I performed in almost a year ago, is now premiering at the biggest film festival in the world. It’s something I never expected would happen. But I guess when you work with some amazingly talented people, you can definitely raise your expectations!”

Congrats, Simon! Even in that little clip, the emotional turmoil of your character was very evident. Any way we could see the film outside of Cannes?

Cool, well done and good luck! I was in a British film noir, Dead In France, that was screened last year and is to be shown again this year, on Saturday in fact! Wonderful feeling.

Congrats to you Simon! Your movie looks like a thriller!
I know the feeling. The Hungarian horror/comedy film, Gingerclown 3D starring, Tim Curry and several other voices besides myself, will be playing at Cannes, May 19. I also voiced the trailer for the film. I’m excited!!!
Good luck to you at Cannes and beyond!
